Meeting Richard: creating unique Shakespeare experiences with just actor, space and audience
Emily Carding will perform an extract from Brite Theater's award-winning solo adaptation of Shakespeare's Richard III which puts you at the heart of the action, and was performed in the past at The Rose Playhouse. This will be followed by a short talk about her experience creating, performing and touring the show, and will also include a Q&A session.
Richard III (A One Woman Show) was created by director Kolbrun Bjort Sigfusdottir and performer Emily Carding during a theatre residency in Reykjavik, Iceland in November 2014, and premiered at the Prague Fringe in May 2015, winning every single award — unprecedented in the history of the Prague Fringe. It then went on to win the coveted ‘Bobby’ award at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Since then Richard III (A One Woman Show) has toured throughout the UK and internationally, including Rome, Verona, Iceland, Slovakia, Romania, Pakistan, St Petersburg and New York, all to high praise. If you’d like to learn more about the show, go to www.onewomanrichard.co.uk.
Tickets are £5 and can be booked through TryBooking by clicking here. You will receive a link to this Zoom event via email. Any additional contributions for The Rose Playhouse will be much appreciated and go towards funding the Rose Revealed Project. Please note that bookings will close at 5:30 pm on 9 June.
“Emily Carding and Kolbrun Bjort Sigfusdottir’s adaptation of Richard III is a smart, sparse, stripped back version of the text built around Carding’s utterly compelling performance.” **** The Stage
“Emily Carding’s portrayal of the king who murders his way to the English throne is in a league of its own.” ***** Broadway Baby
About Emily Carding
Emily Carding is an experienced Shakespearean actor, having appeared in versions of over 20 of Shakespeare’s plays, both on stage and screen. She holds a BA (hons) in Theatre Arts from Bretton Hall and an MFA in Staging Shakespeare from the University of Exeter. Emily has, together with independent theatre company Brite Theater, created a number of challenging and innovative shows, including Hamlet (an experience) and Richard III (A One Woman Show), both of which have won awards and rave reviews internationally. Both adaptations use the audience as characters within the play and create a truly immersive experience with very little other than actor, text, space and audience. Emily is also an accomplished screen actor, and played opposite Martin Freeman in the British horror movie hit, Ghost Stories.
In 2018 Emily was commissioned by the London Science Museum to create a solo theatre piece inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Quintessence imagines a future where humanity has become extinct and must be recreated by AI, using Shakespeare as a guide to the human spirit. This won the outstanding theatre award at the Brighton Fringe in 2019. She is hoping to develop this piece further for digital media.
The Rose is an indoor archaeological site; it is advisable to dress warmly because there is no heating. There are no toilets, so please use those at Shakespeare’s Globe, which is 200 metres away.
